Greater Atlantic Rescue Dogs (GARD) K9 Search and Rescue

GARD is a Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) certified, professional
volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) resource available to assist authorities with lost, or missing
people in urban, wilderness or disaster settings and human remains detection and recovery.
Members of GARD undergo education, training and certification in:

•        Search Management
•        National Incident Management System (NIMS)
•        Communications
•        Subject Awareness-Lost Person Behavior
•        Crime Scene Preservation
•        CPR/First Aid for Humans & Canines
•        Land Navigation and Orienteering
•        Weather Impact on Search Strategy
•        Search Dog Handling & Canine Behavior
•        Scent Theory

GARD deploys with wilderness & first aid equipment, including a mobile base of operations
providing radio communication, computer with topographic mapping and printing. All resources
have been acquired by member purchase, donations, fund raising or through grants.
Requesting GARD Professional Resources

VDEM SAR Program links SAR resources with requesting
agencies from any local, State and Fed¬eral First
Responders such as police, fire, EMS, Sheriffs, and others.
Requests for assistance come from local jurisdiction to the
Virginia Emergency Operations Center 24/7, 365 days of
